Denver Broncos sign Elvis Dumervil to contract extension

One of the most storied franchises in the NFL over the past twenty years or so has been the Denver Broncos as they won two Super Bowl titles and had one of the most iconic quarterbacks of all-time in John Elway.

Since the days of John Elway in his future Hall of Fame head coach Mike Shanahan, the Denver Broncos have been going through an extensive rebuilding process which at one point looked very promising with a Pro Bowl caliber quarterback in Jay Cutler and an up and coming superstar wide receiver in Brandon Marshall.

Despite the Broncos looking like a team on the rise once again in the AFC conference, it all fell apart a couple of seasons ago after Mike Shanahan was fired and the team to get chance on a first-time head coach in Josh McDaniels.

At first, the hiring of McDaniels was highly criticized in really disliked by the Broncos faithful in Denver, but ultimately it seemed to be the right move as the promising young head coach had been able to turn this franchise around in just a few months as leader of silence.

So even though the Denver Broncos no longer had their Pro bowl quarterback in Jay Cutler after he requested a trade and ultimately was sent to the Chicago Bears, the once dominant team in the AFC West still saw some success with quarterback Kyle Orton behind center in a team filled with a bunch of unproven players.

One of the most impressive players last season for the Denver Broncos was on the defensive side of the football in linebacker Elvis Dumervil. Despite being relatively unknown player in the league had undersized at his position at just 5’11”, Dumervil became one of the best linebackers in the league with 17 sacks and four forced fumbles.

These numbers were impressive to say the least as no one expected much out of Dumervil last season and now that he has shown the Denver Broncos that he is one of the best defensive players in this league, payday was inevitable as the linebacker was due for a big contract extension.

Even though there was no debate that Dumervil was the new best defender on the Broncos, there was a lot of speculation around the league that Denver might not pay him the money he is worth and the linebacker could be headed elsewhere.

Fortunately, the Broncos decided to sign the Pro Bowl caliber linebacker to a contract extension recently with a six-year deal worth about $61.5 million dollars. Not only is this a huge contract extension and quite possibly much more than many people anticipated the linebacker would get paid, but the guaranteed money in this contract is unprecedented as well as Dumervil will have $43.1 million dollars guaranteed.

Whether or not Elvis Dumervil is worth this new contract from the Broncos remains to be seen, but Denver was wise to keep their best defensive player as they will need him in order to contend in a competitive AFC West division that seems to get better with every passing season.
