Houston Texans make Andre Johnson highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL

The Houston Texans have been in existence for eight years now and even though many people have expected much from this NFL expansion team, quarterback Matt Schaub and company have really turned the corner recently as they could be a legitimate playoff team sooner rather than later.

As good as it is playing in the same division as Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts and are in a very competitive AFC conference, doesn’t help their chances of becoming a playoff team, but over the past two seasons they have shown signs of life on the offensive side of the football with the emerge of two Pro Bowl caliber players in quarterback Matt Schaub and wide receiver Andre Johnson.

Even though they might not get the attention that Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne do or can be compared to the likes of the Tom Brady and Randy Moss duo in New England, Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson are arguably the best quarterback/wide receiver combination in the league.

Obviously, with a team that has only been in existence for eight years and has never made the playoffs in the history of the franchise, they aren’t going to get much attention, but they did catch the public eye last season when Schaub threw for a league-high 4,770 yards and Johnson lead the league in receiving yards for the second straight season with 1,569 yards.

With these two Pro Bowler caliber players putting up these kind of numbers on a consistent basis, teams around the league have started to show them the respect they deserve, but even though they were on the verge of finally making the playoffs last season, they fell just short late in the season and had to watch the playoffs from home once again.

Some people may argue that the Houston Texans are still a few players away from becoming a legitimate playoff team in the AFC Conference, but they have gotten progressively better over the past couple of seasons and seem to be destined to make a run at the playoffs in the near future.

Even though he may not be a outspoken wide receiver or a so called “diva” like other players at his position like Chad Ochocinco, Brandon Marshall and Terrell Owens, the Houston Texans Andre Johnson is arguably the best wide receiver in the game today and deserves to get paid like it.

With that being said, the four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver demanded a contract extension this season despite still having five years left on his current deal.

Fortunately for Johnson, the Texans were willing to do anything to keep him in Houston as he is arguably the team’s best player and biggest threat on the offensive side of the football.

Ultimately, after a short period of negotiating, the Texans and their superstar wide receiver agreed to terms on a seven-year deal (two-year extension) which would pay him about $10.5 million annually and $13 million guaranteed over the duration of the contract.
