NFL Week 5: Rams @ Lions

St. Louis Rams @ Detroit Lions Sun. Oct. 10th 1pm EST

The St. Louis Rams and the Detroit Lions are two teams on the rise in the NFL as they have successfully rebuilt their franchises after years of disappointment and failed attempts to reach the playoffs, but this season both these teams might have an outside chance of finally getting back into the postseason.

Obviously, the Detroit Lions have a lot of ground to cover as they have yet to win a game this season, but they have played really well in the first four weeks of the season by taking teams like the Chicago Bears (19-14), Philadelphia Eagles (35-32) and the Green Bay Packers (28-26) the distance.

As for the St. Louis Rams, they have played much better than expected this season as rookie quarterback Sam Bradford has come into his own in just four short weeks and is looking like he could turn into a Pro Bowl caliber quarterback in this league sooner rather than later. With two wins in four games, the St. Louis Rams have not only exceeded expectations, but they might be playoff bound with a shot at winning the NFC West division.

Along with Sam Bradford living up to the hype of being the number one overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Detroit Lions rookie running back Jahvid Best has also been a pleasant surprise for this struggling NFL franchise as he has become the frontrunner for Offensive Rookie of the Year. In the first four weeks of the season, Best has rushed for 174 yards and four touchdowns while racking up the receiving yards as well with 217 and one receiving touchdown.

Needless to say, Best has become the best (no pun intended) offensive option for the Detroit Lions this season and will almost certainly be put to good use against the St. Louis Rams in Week 5. Even though Best has had some injury problems over the past two weeks, the injury report says he will be good to go for Week 5, but the big question for the Detroit Lions heading into Week 5 is whether or not quarterback Matthew Stafford will be able to suit up as he is still recovering from a shoulder injury he sustained in the loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 1.

As of right now, the Detroit Lions are favored to win this matchup against the St. Louis Rams with a -3 point spread. Even though the Lions haven’t won a single game this season, they are still considered the better team of the two and I would have to agree.

All season long the Lions have faced some of the best teams in the league and have been able to hold their own, but in Week 5 I believe they will finally get that elusive first win of the season, especially if Matthew Stafford gets back under center.
