NFL Week 14: Rams @ Saints

St. Louis Rams @ New Orleans Saints Sun. Dec. 12th 2010 4:05pm EST

Coming into the NFL regular season as defending Super Bowl champions, the New Orleans Saints have faced a lot of pressure throughout the entire season to live up to the hype and do what many teams have failed to do in the past by repeating as champions of the NFL.

Despite getting off to a fairly rough start to the season by the Saints’ standards, Drew Brees and company have been able to get back to form as of late as their potent offense come alive in the defenses held back up the points put on the board.

Obviously, with losses to teams like the Cleveland Browns and the Arizona Cardinals earlier in the season, many people believed that there is no way this team would be able to compete with the best of the best in the NFC conference this season, but with recent wins over teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 8 (20-10) and the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day (30-27) the defending Super Bowl champion seem to have turned the corner and are legitimate contenders once again.

Coming into Week 14, the New Orleans Saints will be defending their home field against the division-leading St. Louis Rams. Even though the Rams are leading the way in the NFC West division, that is a distinction that is misleading as the NFC West is arguably the worst division in football right now and even a losing record might give the Rams the division title.

Despite being the best team in a terrible division, the St. Louis Rams have played much better than anticipated this season as they seem to have made the right choice a number one overall pick Sam Bradford out of Oklahoma.

Even though there’s plenty of things that Sam Bradford needs to improve on in order to be an elite quarterback in this league, the former Heisman Trophy winner has really gotten off to a good start to his NFL career and could have a quite promising future if the team continues to surround him with talented players like running back Steven Jackson.

So the future is looking bright in St. Louis the Rams and they could be playoff bound this season and in the seasons to come, but they will have their toughest test of the year this weekend as they will travel to the Superdome to take on one of the best teams in the NFC conference.

As of right now, the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints have the advantage coming into this matchup with a -9 point spread in their favor.

With this spread been extremely high and the fact that the St. Louis Rams have been pretty unpredictable throughout the season, I would say the best bet here would be to take the Rams at +9 as they will probably not pull off the upset, but they will make this a closer game than the spread indicates.
