NFL Week 3: Washington Redskins @ Dallas Cowboys

The NFC East division has been one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL for quite some time with four teams that could compete for a playoff spot every single year. This year all four teams are looking pretty good right out of the gate with the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys all winning at least one of their first two games.

Ironically enough, the one team in first place in the NFC East division right now is the Washington Redskins as they have won two straight and are looking much better than anticipated. With Rex Grossman as head coach Mike Shanahan’s starting quarterback, the Redskins offense has been firing on all cylinders and played well enough to beat the division rival New York Giants (28-14) and the Arizona Cardinals (22-21).

Over the past few years, the Washington Redskins have been somewhat of a joke with little or no chance of competing for the NFC East division title, but this season they might fly under the radar and surprise some people as legitimate playoff contenders.

In Week 2, the Washington Redskins will head to Big D to take on Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys. Much like the Redskins, the Cowboys have been a disappointing team over the past few years and have failed to live up to expectations. This season the Cowboys got off to a bit of a rough start as they lost to the New York Jets in dramatic fashion by giving up a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Fortunately, last week the Dallas Cowboys were able to get back on track against the rival San Francisco 49ers by pulling off an impressive comeback and handing new head coach Jim Harbaugh his first loss on the NFL level. Despite coming out on top in Week 2 with an impressive come-from-behind win over the 49ers, the Cowboys suffered some costly losses with Pro Bowlers Tony Romo and Miles Austin going down with injuries.

Miles Austin’s hamstring injury looks like it could keep him out for at least the next month or so, but quarterback Tony Romo could play as early as Monday night against the Washington Redskins.

Reportedly, Romo broke a rib in the win over the 49ers and punctured a lung. This sounds pretty rough to say the least, but apparently the Cowboys are saying that Romo might be able to get back on the field in Week 3 to take on the Redskins if the pain level is bearable.

As of right now, the point spread is even, but that will almost certainly change when the playing status of Tony Romo is announced later in the week. Another player that might affect the point spread is the playing status of wide receiver Dez Bryant. Miles Austin will miss this game, but if Dez Bryant does as well the Cowboys offense will take a major hit.

If Tony Romo and Dez Bryant are given the green light for this game I would take the Cowboys to win and cover a spread as high as -7, but otherwise the Redskins will come out on top.
